A New Look, More Gear, and Better Search

Thanks for your patience, I know it has been a while since we have posted any updates about the site.

With this update I can proudly announce a few UI tweaks to make the site look cleaner and load much faster. We hope to make a few more subtle tweaks in the near future that will make the site more usable and better looking.

We have long been promising more gear from more retailers. After re-working a lot of code, we will now be able to import data much more rapidly. As of today we have indexed 21,774 pieces of climbing and outdoor gear from 6 retailers. The recent additions to our retailers include: BackcountryAltrec, and Sierra Trading Post with others looming on the horizon.

The big news for this update is new and improved search for the site. Search results should be more relevant, and returned faster than before. We are still tuning some things so if you happen to get strange results let us know what you searched for and what you were expecting. Big thanks to IndexTank for letting us try out their hosted search platform.

Please give the site a whirl and see what you think, hopefully you will like our improvments.

Thanks for your continued support. Climb on safely.

Site Updates And A New Home

Greetings!

In my last post I mentioned that we were having server issues and searching for a new online home for the site. As of today, we have officially moved Climber Bum to a new and awesome Django hosting service. I literally begged them to let me into their beta program and they welcomed us with open arms allowing for continuity of service and minimal headaches. Thanks guys!

Aside from moving to a new host we have been busy tweaking the site and at long last updating the number of retailers. We currently are indexing climbing gear from Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS), REI, and Moosejaw for a total of 4662 items! We are super excited about indexing more retailers in the near future and making it easier to find the best deals on climbing gear anywhere. I am thinking Backcountry, Altrec, and Sierra Trading Post will be next on the list.

If you haven't checked out the site in awhile, feel free to poke around and see what we have been up to, and who knows - you may just find a great deal on climbing gear while you are at it.

Thanks everyone for the awesome support and as always, climb on safely.

What's Going On?

Hello all. It has been a few weeks since we officially launched so I thought that I would check in and let you all know what has been happening behind the scenes here at Climber Bum.

First, based on your input I have been working on expanding the categories of things to index to not just strictly climbing gear, but also other things that climbers need such as jackets and packs.

Second, based on reviewing analytical user data (that's you using the site) I have made several small tweaks to the layout of the navigation, the table displays, and the product pages in order to make them more usable.

Third, I performed a performance audit and made lots of tweaks to optimize the loading of the pages to be as fast as I can get them.

Lastly, I have also been working on streamlining the process with which I index and analyze data from retailers and growing the index of things we list on this site. This will enable me to be much faster to add new retailers and brands going forward.

Unfortunately, with any small venture such as this site, there are bound to be hiccups along the way. I received notice last week from my current host that they are closing down at the end of March and that I will need to transition this site to a new server home. This came as a complete surprise to me and since then I have been looking for a replacement in hopes of minimizing any down time. Once I have moved us over to a new web host I will again continue updating the index with more great deals on climbing gear. In the very near future I hope to have gear from REI, EMS, and Backcountry added to the site.

I will do my best to keep you all in the loop. In the mean time, I welcome any and all comments and feedback.

Climb on safely.
